South African Wines
Over the last 10 years, South Africa has made massive investments in its vineyards. This is to compensate for years of neglect. The main issue had nothing to do with wine per se, but was a result of the boycott from which the country suffered as a result of its apartheid policy. In other wine growing regions around the world progress had been made in the development of disease resistant clones. Most of these developments had passed South Africa by and its viticulture suffered. But all of that has changed. South African wines are enjoying huge popularity around the world and the country is scrambling to catch up. In 1997, 20% of the plantings in South Africa were red varieties. And with the world wanting even more red, today those red plantings are up to 45%. The South African style is soft and easy drinking. Look for their signature grape Pinotage, from either Stellenbosch or Paarl, the two prime grape growing regions.
