To properly store wines you don't have to have a wine cooler. Just remember these five basic points and you can keep your wine safe even in a third story apartment. One, keep the bottle lying down. This keeps the cork wet. If the cork dries out, it can shrink allowing oxygen into the bottle. Two, the temperature should be as cool and even as possible. The warmer the wine the faster it ages. Aim for between 50 and 60 degrees fahrenheit. Three, place the bottles in a dark place. The sunlight can actually deteriorate wine - and white wines suffer the most. Four, humidity is good for your bottles of wine. Similar to keeping the bottle on its side, humidity stops the cork from drying out and shrinking. And finally number five, you should never keep wine for long periods anywhere there is a strong, potent smell. These smells can permeate the cork and actually taint the wine.
