Ernest and Julio Gallo
Near the town of Modesto, California, is the headquarters of the world's largest wine company, Ernest and Julio Gallo Winery. Their production of bottles is estimated at over 900 million annually. The company's namesakes, Ernest and Julio were born in the US to a family of Italian immigrants from the Piedmont region. They were in the right place at the right time: California, 1933, just after the repeal of prohibition. With absolutely no experience, Ernest and Julio produced their first bottling all on credit, borrowed barrels, presses, even borrowed grapes. They sold out. More recently, Julio's granddaughter, Gina, has taken the Gallo name in a new direction producing some excellent premium wines under the Gallo Reserve label. So, if you enjoy Rancho Zabaco, Ecco Domani, Frei Brothers, Turning Leaf, Barefoot Cellars, or the new Martha Stewart Vintage, you're enjoying Ernest and Julio Gallo wine.
